Prof. Sue Garreis

Dear Professor. Susan Garreis,

Thank you for your reply and corrections of my English.

I will answer your questions.

>No, I am not familiar with that. Are those different names for October? Tell me more, please.
šNot only in October, is called autumn as pointing to the entire season.
šThese are so called from the custom in ancient Japan.

>Oh, ok. Thank you.

>The temperature is about 100 degrees Fahrenheit (38 degrees Celsius) for
>several days.
>That is too hot for me.
>How do you stay cool in the summer?
šI know some cool way to spend the summer.
šI will introduce the following three items.

EUchimizu
šUchimizu is a custom in Japan since ancient times.
šThis will cool the heat through vaporization caused by watering the garden or the road.
šPlease try to because there is reference to the following URL;

>Very interesting! And very effective! When I was a child, the larger cities would open up a fire hydrant and let it run in the streets. Children played in the water. We do not do that any more. We must conserve water.

ESudare
šAnother ancient Japanese custom is Sudare.
šSudare is a summer tradition in Japan.
šThey are placed mainly outside the window and eaves.
šThey block direct sunlight and insects and the view of others passing on the street.

>My heavens! Yes, we use sudare here, too. We call them bamboo curtains.
Most of the time sudare are used here on enclosed porches.
Most houses in the US have central air conditioning.
Bamboo curtains used on regular house windows block sunlight and heat.
I remember a house I lived in as a child had bamboo curtains. I loved how they rolled up!

EWind chime
šThe most common material for Japanese wind chimes is glass.
šIn addition some are made of metal, bamboo, charcoal or pottery.
šJapanese people feel the coolness in sound and visual clarity.
šI think the best wind chimes are made of glass.
šYou can learn more by referring to the following URL:

>I love wind chimes!
>How clever of Japanese people to link coolness with the sound of wind chimes!
>How beautiful the whole country must sound with all the wind chimes playing.
>My neighbor has a wind chime.
>I love to listen to it.

What food do you like to eat in hot weather?

Sincerely yours,

Kazu

We both like to sew.

Last Wednesday was July 4.
It is the biggest American holiday.
It is our country's birthday.
Here is a page I made about the Fourth of July: http://msgarreis.com/July4th.htm
Do not translate all the linked pages. Look at the pictures.
On one page you can hear some spoken English.
The man talks about barbequeing chicken.
